Morphological description

Rhizomatous herbs.

Leaves

Leaves usually consisting of bladeless stem-clasping sheaths.

Inflorescence

Plants dioecious.

Flowers

Flowers tepals 4-6, free; stamens 3, ovary superior with 1 ovule. Usually unisexual.

Fruit

Fruit capsules, nutlets or follicles opening by slits.

Seed

Seed.

Different from: Cyperaceae: leaves three ranked. - Juncaceae: flowers bisexual, ovules many. 

Distribution: The family almost entirely confined to the southern hemisphere, best represented in Australia. In Malesia only Leptocarpus with 3 species.
