Aquatic, rootless herbs.

Leaves verticillate, forked, dentate.
Inflorescence
Plants monoecious.
Flowers
Flower unisexual, actinomorphic, perianth valvate, ovary superior.
Fruits
Fruit with spines.
Different from: Hydrocharitaceae: roots present, leaves simple. - Najadaceae: leaves linear, sheathing.
Distribution: The family consists of one genus, Ceratophyllum, with two widespread species, both in Malesia.
Notes: Sometimes used as aquarium plants.
