Familia Primulaceae

PRIMULACEAE

NB The family Primulaceae under APG IV includes families formerly treated separately closely to Primulaceae. This is also the case for the former family Myrsiniaceae, which is now subfamily Myrsinoideae (here you can find it under Primulaceae (Myrsinaceae). This Plant Portrait describes the subfamily Primuloideae.

Morphological description

Herbs.

Leaves

Leaves simple, penninerved, exstipulate. Usually spiral or in a rosette.

Inflorescence

Inflorescence.

Flowers

Flower usually actinomorphic, bisexual, calyx dentate, corolla tubular, stamens on tube opposite the lobes; ovary superior, 1-celled, ovules numerous.

Fruit

Fruit a capsule.

Seed

Seed.

Different from: Myrsinoideae: mostly woody, fruit a drupe.

Distribution: The family best represented in the northern hemisphere. In Malesia 3 genera, including Lysimachia (worldwide), erect or prostrate herbs, mostly montane.

Notes: Primula prolifera is a potential ornamental.
